Learn more about anorexia treatment at Sierra Tucson
Anorexia nervosa, a serious mental health condition that can be fatal, is an appropriate diagnosis for an individual who goes to great lengths to achieve the lowest weight possible. Individuals battling this disorder often fast, excessively exercise, consume a minimal amount of food, and/or abuse substances in order to drastically alter their physical appearance. The psychological distortions coupled with the health risks associated with this condition can make it very difficult for a person to overcome alone. Therefore, medical interventions and therapeutic approaches are required to achieve a healthy life. Sierra Tucson, the best rehab center for anorexia treatment, provides treatment for anorexia nervosa as a secondary diagnosis to help improve the lives of anorexia sufferers, with a goal of restoring each individual to good health – physically, mentally, and spiritually.
Helping a loved one get treatment for anorexia
Loved ones and family members of someone battling anorexia often experience feelings of bewilderment as they bear witness to someone they care about dangerously lose weight and put his or her health at risk for the sake of having little to no body fat. The fear-driven desire to be thin despite the costs to one’s health is often confusing and worrisome to loved ones, which can lead to feelings of powerlessness when trying to think of ways to help someone with this mental illness. As a concerned loved one, there are some things that you can do to help someone in your life get the life-saving treatment he or she desperately needs:
- Learn about anorexia nervosa, including its causes, the symptoms, and potential effects. This disorder is often misperceived as one that only has roots in wanting to be thin; however, what non-sufferers of this disorder need to understand is that the core causes often lay in the deeply held psychological distortions that can make this disorder so dangerous.
- Discuss the need for treatment with your loved one, conveying your worry for his or her health and life in an empathic way.
- Involve your loved one in the process of seeking treatment. By making the treatment-seeking process a collaborative one, the person you care about can be more invested in his or her own care.
- If the person you care about is experiencing severe health risks due to the presence of this condition, it is a good idea to consider treatment that involves medical care in order to address any health concerns.
- Inform your loved one that you are available to listen to his or her concerns, worries, and fears regarding his or her condition and treatment. This is a great way to show your support.
The last two suggestions are among the most important, once your loved one is engaged in treatment. First, it is important that you encourage your loved one to adhere to treatment recommendations made by his or her provider, as adherence to such recommendations can elicit the most favorable treatment outcomes. Then, it is crucial that you, as a concerned loved one, get involved in your friend or family member’s care. This is a wonderful way to be supportive and, by being a part of treatment, you can learn how to help your loved one be successful once treatment is complete.
Why consider treatment for anorexia at Sierra Tucson
Individuals battling anorexia nervosa are often at a heightened risk for a great deal of harm when this disorder remains present for a long period of time. Anorexia nervosa rarely exists in isolation; therefore, we treat this condition as a co-occurring disorder. When a person reaches a dangerously low body weight, several health concerns are known to ensue—health concerns that can be life-threatening. Women struggling with this condition may become infertile as a result and men and women alike may experience irreversible organ damage. The mental health of those struggling with anorexia can worsen over time and trigger the onset of additional concerns. Failing to seek care that includes medical treatment and psychological interventions can put these people at a higher risk for an untimely and early death. Fortunately, there are treatment options that exist that can save the lives of those who wish to break free from the destructive and disordered eating patterns and thought processes associated with anorexia nervosa.

Situated on our rehab’s 160-acre campus are Desert Flower – a 15-bed behavioral health inpatient unit – and a 124-bed behavioral health residential treatment center. Residents who require immediate stabilization due to the presence of psychiatric concerns or those who are in need of medical detoxification services can receive these interventions at Desert Flower prior to engaging in our treatment center’s residential care. For those individuals who are suffering from disordered eating, engaging in treatment at Desert Flower may be the first step in their recovery process if medical stabilization is needed. Following completion of the treatment at Desert Flower, residents will then engage in the comprehensive treatment offered at our rehab’s behavioral health residential treatment center.
Individual therapy: Master’s-level clinicians and/or licensed psychologists at our rehab offer individual therapy sessions with residents between one and several times per week depending upon the treatment modality that is being used. Each resident’s therapist will be assigned to him or her depending on the identified presenting concerns, the therapeutic approach that will be used in order to effectively address those concerns, and the specific training that the therapist possesses. These sessions occur in a confidential, one-to-one setting where the resident is afforded the opportunity to discuss his or her progress in treatment, address any concerns that may arise, and process through various feelings that he or she is experiencing.
Group therapy: Residents engaged in our treatment center’s Eating Recovery Services will meet at various times throughout the week in order to participate in group therapy sessions, where they can find support and encouragement from one another, in addition to learning new skills. Examples of such groups may include, but are not limited to:
- DBT Skills Group
- General Process Group
- Disordered Eating Process Group
- Food for Thought Group
- Exercise Groups (Keeping in mind the sensitive nature that surrounds exercise in correlation to disordered eating, exercise is highly monitored and all residents will have individualized exercise plans that may include strength training, yoga, flexibility, and hydrotherapy. Qualified and knowledgeable fitness staff members work with residents in order to help them develop healthy exercise behaviors.)
Additional topics that may be covered during the variety of group sessions may include, but are not limited to:
- Working through grief and loss
- Relapse prevention
- Healing anxiety
- Topics in mental health
Four-Day Family Program: Recognizing the important role of loved ones in the lives of residents, our rehab’s family treatment plan includes Family Week, a four-day experience for family members and other close identified loved ones of residents. Family Week typically occurs during a resident’s third week of treatment and allows loved ones to engage in the therapeutic process on site to practice healthy communication and boundaries with understanding and support. Family members and loved ones can attend psycho-educational lectures, process groups, equine therapy, mindfulness meditation, and a family dinner that can unify a family unit in a powerful way. Lastly, loved ones can remain in contact with a resident’s primary therapist should questions or concerns arise during the course of treatment.
Therapeutic & Recreational Activities: In order to help residents at our anorexia treatment center build a stronger sense of self and increased confidence as they overcome disordered eating, this treatment option offers residents a myriad of therapeutic activities, which are conducted on a daily or weekly basis. A resident’s participation in such activities will be outlined in his or her treatment plan and may include the following:
- Equine therapy
- Expressive art
- Adventure therapy

Continuing care and levels of treatment for anorexia
Sierra Tucson’s method for providing premier all-encompassing care for every resident who comes for treatment includes thorough discharge planning and continuing care services. Once a resident engages in services to treat disordered eating and other primary conditions at our rehab, a comprehensive continuing care plan is developed so that he or she can remain successful after treatment. Those partaking in the services at Desert Flower meet with continuing care staff members that assess their individual needs and plan for discharge. Those engaged in the residential treatment at our rehab center meet with the same continuing care staff and their local treatment placement specialist (TPS), and participate in lectures and one-on-one planning sessions to ensure quality referrals and establish any follow-up appointments that may be required once they have been discharged.
Furthermore, residents exiting the residential treatment center, along with their family members, can benefit from Connect365, a year-long service to help bridge the gap between residential treatment and life in recovery. This service is offered at no additional cost and includes a personal recovery coach, a recovery management system via a mobile app, and ongoing encouragement from the participant’s support team. Residents connect with their recovery coach during treatment in order to build a strong rapport with him or her prior to discharge.
Lastly, former residents can take part in our anorexia rehab’s Alumni Relations. These services include support groups offered throughout the country, workshops, social activities, and the annual Alumni Retreat.
