How to Help a Loved One

Helping a loved one get treatment for suicidal ideation

It can be extremely challenging and distressing to have a loved one or a family member wrestling with thoughts of suicide. For onlookers, this condition can be heart-wrenching and devastating. Since those afflicted with this mental health symptom experience this process internally, it can be hard for anyone else to know what is going on unless the afflicted individual shares their thoughts verbally or behaviorally. The following serve as indicators that suggest an individual is suffering from suicidal ideation:

  • Engaging in self-harming behaviors, such as cutting, burning, etc.
  • Displaying a depressed or overtly anxious mood that is not characteristic of the individual
  • Communicating thoughts or ideas about death, including how they would want to die, questioning how others would react or what they would do if they were no longer alive
  • Giving away personal belongings

In many instances, those who are struggling with suicidal ideation are suffering from symptoms of a mental health condition or conditions. Some of the most common mental illnesses that can include suicidal thoughts are:

  • Bipolar disorder
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Depressive disorders
  • Anxiety disorders

If the symptoms listed above are noticeable in your loved one, it is imperative that you reach out for guidance from a mental health professional as quickly as possible. Continued suicidal ideation can eventually lead to suicide attempts and/or death. By obtaining treatment from a mental health professional, you can obtain the critical information that you need regarding treatment options for your loved one that might save their life.

Why Consider Treatment

Why consider treatment for suicidal ideation at Sierra Tucson

Unfortunately, many who experience suicidal ideation tend to suffer in silence. In many instances, individuals might start to feel hopeless or helpless when thinking about their future and turn to putting together plans to end their life for good. When this kind of thinking continues without treatment, some individuals will put their plans into motion and make an attempt to take their life – a scenario that is horrifying to their loved ones. Thankfully, there are options for treatment that can address these thoughts and allow individuals who struggle with suicidal ideation to eventually reclaim hope for the future and develop new skills to manage stress.

When someone is experiencing suicidal ideation, it is often necessary that intensive treatment is obtained and implemented. More intensive care, which can be obtained through residential treatment, can be highly effective for individuals who struggle with these thoughts, as it allows them to obtain support and care so they are no longer silently suffering. At Sierra Tucson, a premier suicidal thoughts treatment center, we have a multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals who have the ability to provide guidance and support right away. In addition, since suicidal ideation signifies the presence of a mental health condition, any existing mental illnesses can be identified, and treatment with many different therapeutic modalities can be supplied in residential care. Meetings with psychiatric medical providers may also occur in this setting so that it can be determined if medication can help in the reduction of symptoms of mental illness. For many, residential treatment like that supplied at our rehab is the best option for care that can fully and comprehensively treat suicidal ideation.

If you or someone you care for is struggling with suicidal ideation, do not hesitate to reach out for help right away. Please contact us at our treatment cetner today to get the help you or a loved one needs to make it through this challenging time.

Following completion of the treatment, residents will then engage in the comprehensive treatment offered at our treatment center’s behavioral health residential treatment center.

Treatment for suicidal ideation is delivered through our rehab’s Mood & Anxiety Program. Offered within our behavioral health residential treatment center, services supplied in this treatment plan are designed to produce the most favorable outcomes for all residents. The types of services you receive will be determined by your treatment team. The intensive nature of this treatment incorporates cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) workshops in addition to continuously providing psychodynamic therapy throughout the various aspects of the therapeutic process. Residents engaged in the Mood & Anxiety Program are offered the following treatment methods, of which are outlined in each person’s individualized treatment plan, as well as in our rehab center’s daily treatment schedules:

Medication management: Individuals who are suffering from suicidal ideation often find alleviation from their symptoms through the implementation of psychotropic medications. The need for medication, however, is always determined on a case-by-case basis at our suicidal ideation treatment center. Residents engaged in the Mood & Anxiety treatment plan are seen by a psychiatrist or attending physician on a weekly basis in order to determine the need for medication, monitor medication, and adjust any medication that has been prescribed. Registered nurses and clinical technicians also assist in monitoring an individual’s medication needs.

Individual therapy: Upon entering the Mood & Anxiety treatment plan, each resident is assigned a primary therapist with whom they will meet at least once a week. All individual sessions at our rehab are conducted by master’s-level clinicians and licensed psychologists and are designed to afford residents the opportunity to discuss their progress in treatment, address any concerns that may arise, and process through various feelings that they are experiencing.

Group therapy: At the time that residents are admitted into the Mood & Anxiety treatment plan, they are assigned to a small group of peers, all of whom are engaged in the same plan. This group will meet together for therapy sessions four times per week at our treatment center. In addition to serving as a general process group, topics that are covered during these group sessions may include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing stress
  • Identifying and processing feelings of shame to move to a place of resilience
  • Working through grief and loss
  • Learning tools for how to express anger in a healthy and productive manner
  • Mindfulness

  • Learning about codependency and coping skills
  • Learning about holistic options for healthy living

Therapeutic & Recreational Activities: In order to help residents build a stronger sense of self and increased confidence as they overcome the symptoms of suicidal ideation, this treatment option offers them a myriad of therapeutic activities, which are conducted daily or on a weekly basis. A resident’s participation in such activities will be outlined in their treatment plan and may include the following:

  • Psychodrama
  • Adventure therapy (including a ropes course and rock wall)
  • Yoga
  • Personal training

Continuing Care

Continuing care and levels of treatment for suicidal ideation

Sierra Tucson’s method for providing all-encompassing care for every resident who comes for treatment includes thorough discharge planning and continuing care services. Once a resident engages in services to treat suicidal ideation at our rehab, a comprehensive continuing care plan is devised so that they can remain successful once treatment is complete. Those partaking in the services meet with continuing care staff to assess each individual’s needs and plan for discharge. Those engaged in the residential programming at our treatment center meet with the same continuing care staff and their local treatment placement specialist (TPS), participate in lectures and one-on-one planning sessions to ensure quality referrals and establish any follow-up appointments that may be required once they have been discharged.

Furthermore, residents exiting the residential treatment center, along with their family members, can benefit from Connect365—a year-long service to help bridge the gap between residential treatment and life in recovery. This service is offered at no additional cost and includes a personal recovery coach, a recovery management system via a mobile app, and ongoing encouragement from the participant’s support team. Residents connect with their recovery coach during treatment in order to build a strong rapport with them prior to discharge.

Lastly, former residents can take part in our suicidal thoughts rehab’s Alumni Relations. These services include support groups offered throughout the country, workshops, social activities, and the annual Alumni Retreat.

If you or a loved one wishes to receive the superior care that has improved the lives of many individuals who have struggled with suicidal ideation, look no further than our treatment center. The life you have envisioned can begin here.
