Marijuana Use Patterns in an Age of Legalization

We will focus on the legalization of marijuana specifically. We will explore how use patterns have changed over time, as well as the way people see this drug now that it is becoming more widely accepted. When legalizing a substance, one must take into account the effects this shift in policy will have on the perception of the substance, as well as how those in the community use the substance.  We will look at marketing strategies and the impact marketing has on the community’s perceptions of marijuana.  We will also look at clinical data surrounding the effects of marijuana on mental health and how it may exacerbate concerns people are trying to mitigate.  Lastly, we will discuss awareness of the addiction potential of this substance, regardless of its legal status.

Objectives:

  • Identify two aspects of legalization that may contribute to increased use/addiction potential.
  • Describe how legalization might lead to marketing campaigns directed at making marijuana more appealing.
  • Identify two common misconceptions of marijuana use and its effects on behavior.
  • Explain what how to raise awareness to these issues.
