This presentation will discuss the latest research on using psychedelics to treat addiction and mental health disorders/illness. The mechanisms of action and associated brain changes will be addressed. This presentation will address the correlations between psychedelic experiences and meditative states. Michael B. Levin, MD is a psychiatrist with a specialty in addictionology. He has a private practice in Denver, CO and has been treating patients with addictions for over 25 years. His approach to treatment of addictions arises from his varied professional background, which includes careers as an electrical engineer, a neuroscience researcher, and an internist before his present career in psychiatry and psychoanalysis. His approach in treating addictive behavior, draws from these varied points of view as well as a lifelong philosophical interest in what it means to be human and to be in relationship with another human. Dr Levin was one of the physicians involved in the Phase II trials of the MAPS study on use of MDMA in treatment of PTSD. He has been an adjunct faculty member at the University of Colorado Department of Psychiatry and the Denver University Graduate School of Professional Psychology. Along the way, he managed to practice meditating for 40 years and do 7 years of psychoanalytic training.
