Join us as Phil Mitchell, MA, MFT Spiritual Counselor & Grief Therapist, discusses the importance of honoring all feelings/emotions, the role of deep breathing in psychotherapy, and the tool of imagination. Phil will also look at various teachings from spirituality and from near-death experience (NDE) studies, as they pertain to Grief, Loss and Spirituality.

Phillip S. Mitchell, MA, MFT (CA), MAC - Spiritual Counselor, Grief Therapist

Phillip S. Mitchell earned his master’s degree in Humanistic and Transpersonal Clinical Psychology in 1980 from Johnston College, University of Redlands, in Redlands, California. He has been licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) in California since 1981. In 1998, he became certified as a Master Addictions Counselor (MAC) through the National Association of Forensic Counselors. He has served in the fields of mental health and recovery since 1971 in the areas of clinical services, program development, administration, and private practice. Since 1990, Phillip has filled many positions at Sierra Tucson, including family therapist for eating disorder and chemical dependency residents, spiritual counselor, float therapist, primary therapist, and workshop presenter (Alumni Retreats, Quality of Life workshops, etc.). He has studied many spiritual teachings, eastern and western, throughout his adult life and this continues to be a great passion of his. He has written several articles on recovery and related matters for professional journals and for Sierra Tucson publications. In April 2017, Phillip assumed the role of spiritual counselor and grief therapist at Sierra Tucson. Whether residents are following a religious or spiritual path currently, engaged in 12-Step Recovery, agnostic or atheist, questioning their spirituality, or simply open and interested in exploring their sense of spiritual connection, he helps guide them through their own spiritual journey. He facilitates weekly grief groups and continues to provide lectures and staff training as needed. Phillip also founded Sierra Tucson’s Green Team. His book, “Breathe, Feel, Heal, Awaken: Living and Loving Your Heart’s Path,” and his CD, “The Technology of Forgiveness,” are available in Sierra Tucson’s bookstore and online at www.Amazon.com.
