Seminar Description:

August 24, 2018
Topic: Clinical Approaches to Working with LGBTQ® Populations

Presenter: Matthew LeBauer, LCSW, LeBauer Counseling

In this engaging presentation and panel discussion, behavioral health professionals will explore the unique demands on clinicians & treatment programs working with the LGBTQ population in culturally competent ways. Participants will hear clinicians’ diverse clinical models & approaches to work with LGBTQ clients, with regards to attachment patterns, systems theory, sex therapy, trauma, addiction and substance use concerns. Panelists will host an open Q&A to give participants an opportunity to ask the questions they’ve not known to ask to offer their LGBTQ clients the sensitive, informed care they deserve.

Objectives:
*Assess unique relational patterns in the LGBTQ communities, including non-monogamy, social-sexual patterns and mores, safer sex in the age of PREP (and the myth of post-AIDs).

* List two ways to apply clinical knowledge to culturally competent work with LGBTQ populations, tailor clinical approaches to the unique, marginalized, experiences of the population and understand where 'standard' (read: heteronormative) clinical approaches may be disruptive, invalidating and traumatic to the LGBTQ population, e.g attachment approaches, relationship development, self-care.

*Define how to employ a nuanced sense of “Self as Therapist” in the clinical work, identifying and correcting misconceptions, biases and limitations, address questions of how/when to get consultation, when to collaborate, when to refer out, so as not to put emotional labor of educating the therapist on the client.

*Explain how to create a safe healing environment that is mindful to the traumatic experience of LGBTQ people as a marginalized, persecuted minority, offers healing and empowerment, protects from toxic messages/replications.
