At Sierra Tucson, the best rehab center for bulimia treatment, we treat bulimia nervosa as a secondary diagnosis to substance use and other mental health disorders.

How to Help a Loved One

Helping a loved one get treatment for bulimia

Bulimia nervosa can trap a person in a brutal cycle of eating and purging that can cost an individual his or her life if treatment is not sought and implemented. Concerned friends and family members of an individual with this disorder frequently feel pangs of worry and fear for the health and wellbeing of the sufferer, especially when health risks begin to emerge. Luckily, there are some steps that friends and family members can take to help someone they care about receive the life-saving treatment that is required to overcome this disorder.

  • Educate yourself about bulimia nervosa and consult with a mental health professional if you have any questions about this condition. In learning about bulimia, you will come to understand the signs, symptoms, causes, and effects of bulimia.
  • Confront your loved one in an understanding and empathic manner and discuss the need for treatment. Keep in mind that you could be met with resistance, but try to remain focused on helping your loved one get treatment.
  • Consider treatment options that are equipped to care for bulimia nervosa and be sure to find a provider that includes premier medical care for your loved one as well.
  • Allow your loved one to be part of the treatment-seeking process and make it as much of a collaborative effort as possible.
  • Contact the provider of you and your loved one’s choosing and inquire about the process of admissions and the methods for care that are used to treat this disorder.
  • Encourage your loved one to schedule an assessment and offer to accompany him or her to the center of choice to offer support.
  • Make every effort to be part of your loved one’s care while he or she is engaged in treatment.

Finally, it is beneficial to advise your loved one to authorize consent to speak with his or her treatment provider, as you can then be kept abreast of his or her progress and garner some suggestions for how you can help your loved one once he or she completes treatment.

Why Consider Treatment

Why consider treatment for bulimia at Sierra Tucson

Disordered eating patterns, no matter the type, are known to involve a number of life-threatening health risks that can cause an untimely death if treatment is not sought. Bulimia nervosa is not without its own set of unique health concerns because of the purging that ensues after an individual ingests a great deal of food. Heart problems, digestive system damage, and poor nutrition are probable when a person suffers from this form of disordered eating. Additionally, sufferers of bulimia often abuse substances as a way to rid the body of food; substances that can cause a great deal of harm in their own right. The psychological distortions experienced by bulimia sufferers can also wreak havoc in an individual’s life. Sierra Tucson, a premier bulimia treatment center, treats disordered eating patterns as a co-occurring condition, when a primary diagnosis of addiction, a mood disorder, trauma or chronic pain is present. Why? Because those who are bulimic often struggle with symptoms of other mental illnesses at the same time and require care for such symptoms in the event that treatment is sought. Luckily, there are options for care available that can improve the lives of those with this form of disordered eating and offer individuals an opportunity to live a happy and healthy life.

As an internationally known and respected treatment provider of medical, therapeutic, and experiential services, our rehab is pleased to offer state-of-the-art treatment for a wide range of behavioral health concerns. Through the use of evidence-based practices and integrative therapies, our treatment center prides itself on being a leading provider of services that are effective in treating addictions and other behavioral health problems. Holistic and individualized treatment is cornerstone to the best care offered at our rehab, and is provided by a staff of qualified and experienced professionals. Our treatment center’s primary goal is to deliver services in such a manner that all who come to us for treatment will benefit from them and pursue a healthy and productive lifestyle.

Our rehab’s serene, 160-acre campus includes Desert Flower – a 15-bed behavioral health inpatient unit – and a 124-bed behavioral health residential treatment center. Residents who require immediate stabilization due to the presence of psychiatric concerns or those who are in need of medical detoxification services can receive these interventions at Desert Flower prior to engaging in our treatment center’s residential care. For those individuals who are suffering from disordered eating, engaging in treatment at Desert Flower may be the first step in their recovery process if they require medical stabilization. Following completion at Desert Flower, residents will then participate in the comprehensive treatment offered at our rehab’s behavioral health residential treatment center.

Individual therapy: Master’s-level clinicians and/or licensed psychologists at our treatment center offer individual therapy sessions with residents between one and several times per week depending upon the treatment modality that is being used. Each resident’s therapist will be assigned to him or her depending upon the identified presenting concerns, the therapeutic approach that will be used in order to effectively address those concerns, and the specific training that the therapist possesses. These sessions occur in a confidential, one-to-one setting where the resident is afforded the opportunity to discuss his or her progress in treatment, address any concerns that may arise, and process through various feelings that he or she is experiencing.

Group therapy: Residents engaged in the Eating Recovery Services at our treatment center will meet at various times throughout the week in order to participate in group therapy sessions, where they can find support and encouragement from one another, in addition to learning new skills. Examples of such groups may include, but are not limited to:

  • Disordered Eating Process Group
  • Food for Thought Group
  • DBT Skills Group
  • General Process Group
  • Exercise Groups (Keeping in mind the sensitive nature that surrounds exercise in correlation to disordered eating, exercise is highly monitored and all residents will have individualized exercise plans that may include strength training, yoga, flexibility, and hydrotherapy. Qualified and knowledgeable fitness staff members work with residents in order to help them develop healthy exercise behaviors.)

Additional topics that may be covered during the variety of group sessions may include, but are not limited to:

  • Healing anxiety
  • Topics in mental health
  • Codependency
  • Relapse prevention
  • Mindfulness

Four-Day Family Program: Recognizing the important role of loved ones in the lives of residents, our bulimia rehab’s family treatment plan includes Family Week, a four-day experience for family members and other close identified loved ones of residents. Family Week typically occurs during a resident’s third week of treatment and allows loved ones to engage in the therapeutic process on site to practice healthy communication and boundaries with understanding and support. Family members and loved ones can attend psycho-educational lectures, process groups, equine therapy, mindfulness meditation, and a family dinner that can unify a family unit in a powerful way. Lastly, loved ones can remain in contact with a resident’s primary therapist should questions or concerns arise during the course of treatment.

Therapeutic & Recreational Activities: In order to help residents at our rehab build a stronger sense of self and increased confidence as they overcome disordered eating, this treatment option offers residents a myriad of therapeutic activities, which are conducted on a daily or weekly basis. A resident’s participation in such activities will be outlined in his or her treatment plan and may include the following:

  • Psychodrama
  • Adventure therapy
  • Equine therapy

Continuing Care

Continuing care and levels of treatment for bulimia

Sierra Tucson’s method for providing all-encompassing care for every resident who comes for treatment includes thorough discharge planning and continuing care services. Once a resident engages in services to treat disordered eating and other primary conditions at our bulimia treatment center, a comprehensive continuing care plan is developed so that he or she can remain successful after treatment. Those partaking in the services at Desert Flower meet with continuing care staff members that assess their individual needs and plan for discharge. Those engaged in the residential treatment at our rehab meet with the same continuing care staff and their local treatment placement specialist (TPS), and participate in lectures and one-on-one planning sessions to ensure quality referrals and establish any follow-up appointments that may be required once they have been discharged.

Furthermore, residents exiting the residential treatment, along with their family members, can benefit from Connect365, a year-long service to help bridge the gap between residential treatment and life in recovery. This service is offered at no additional cost and includes a personal recovery coach, a recovery management system via a mobile app, and ongoing encouragement from the participant’s support team. Residents connect with their recovery coach during treatment in order to build a strong rapport with him or her prior to discharge.

Lastly, former residents can take part in our treatment center’s Alumni Relations. These services include groups offered throughout the country, workshops, social activities and the annual Alumni Retreat.
