Outpatient Program

The healing process doesn’t end when residential treatment does, and, for many, the bridge between structured care and everyday life is where the most meaningful growth happens. Sierra Tucson’s outpatient services are designed to be that bridge.

In our partial hospitalization program (PHP) and intensive outpatient program (IOP), clients can continue building on the work they began in residential care while gradually returning home, to work and to their relationships. Our outpatient services are also open to individuals who are coming directly from the community, even if they have not received behavioral healthcare in the past.

Offering evidence-based and integrative therapies, expert clinical guidance and a community of peers, Sierra Tucson helps individuals turn the lessons of treatment into lasting, real-world change.

Where Change Continues

Sierra Tucson’s partial hospitalization program and intensive outpatient program are designed to help clients identify and live by their values and have accountability after completing residential care. In addition, our outpatient services provide individuals with the opportunity to receive psychoeducation that can help them implement skills in their daily lives.

Who We Serve

Sierra Tucson’s outpatient services are available for adults age 18 and older who are stepping down from the residential level of care or for those who may be starting their healing journey but do not need the round-the-clock services that are offered at higher levels of care.

Our PHP and IOP are appropriate for individuals who are struggling with concerns such as:

  • Mood disorders
  • Anxiety
  • Unresolved trauma
  • Co-occurring disorders

Partial Hospitalization Program

The partial hospitalization program at Sierra Tucson is designed to provide daylong services, offering clients structured care with the flexibility of being able to return home in the evenings.

Our PHP meets five days a week, Monday-Friday, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

The typical length of stay in our PHP is six weeks; however, the actual length of time a person spends in the PHP may vary depending on their specific needs and treatment goals.

Intensive Outpatient Program

The intensive outpatient program is similar to our PHP, but it meets less frequently, giving clients more flexibility to manage their regular daily schedules while also being able to receive the treatment they need.

Our IOP meets four days a week, Monday-Thursday, from 9 a.m.-noon.

The length of time a person spends in our intensive outpatient program will vary based on their unique circumstances and the progress they make while in our care.

Therapies & Modalities

While in our PHP and IOP, clients take part in evidence-based therapies and treatment modalities to ensure that they are receiving well-rounded, clinically excellent care.

Examples of the types of modalities our clinicians use include:

  • Trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT)
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
  • Motivational interviewing (MI)
  • Behavioral activation (BA)
  • Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR)
  • Experiential therapies
  • Internal family systems (IFS)
  • Somatic Experiencing®

In addition, clients have access to complementary therapies, services, activities and educational opportunities, such as:

  • Mental wellness education
  • Distress tolerance and emotion regulation skill development
  • Mindfulness and relaxation
  • Trauma-informed yoga
  • Dance and movement therapy

If a client is taking medication, they can also receive medication management services while getting outpatient care at Sierra Tucson.

A Personalized Approach

We recognize that clients come to us with varied backgrounds and different life experiences, so we tailor their care to meet them where they are. Each client receives an individualized treatment plan that outlines what they can expect during their time in our PHP or IOP.

Prior to receiving outpatient services, each person takes part in a comprehensive assessment that allows our team to gather in-depth information about their personal history. The results of this assessment guide our clinicians as they develop a unique treatment plan.

Sierra on Campus Intensive Outpatient Program

The Sierra on Campus intensive outpatient program is a collaborative initiative between Sierra Tucson and the University of Arizona. It is designed to support students who need additional mental healthcare while remaining active in campus life. Delivered directly on campus, this IOP provides in-depth care that addresses concerns students frequently struggle with, such as anxiety, depression, the effects of trauma and substance use. Visit the Sierra on Campus intensive outpatient program page on the University of Arizona website to learn more.
