Juan Carlos Velez, MSN, PMHNP-BC
Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner
Juan Carlos Velez, MSN, PMHNP-BC, joined Sierra Tucson in February 2018. Juan received his master’s and nurse practitioner degrees from Florida International University, where he graduated with honors. Earning his BSN degree from Nova Southeastern University in Davie, FL, Juan began his nursing career at the Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, FL, gaining experience in multiple patient care areas, before becoming a critical care nurse in their level-one trauma center. Juan’s dedication to his patients and his profession earned him national recognition in 2015 when he received the Daisy Award, an international merit recognition awarded to nurses not just for their excellent clinical skills and leadership, but also for providing exceptional patient and family support and compassion.
It was Juan’s skills and enjoyment of working with people, as well as his love for medical science, that interested him in the nursing profession. Seeing firsthand the unmet mental health issues that his patient population in an urban intercity hospital environment faced drew him to the areas of mental health and chemical dependency. Juan has served as a psychiatric nurse practitioner at mental health facilities in Delray Beach, FL, and Tucson, AZ, prior to joining Sierra Tucson.
Relatively new to Arizona, Juan has embraced hiking and exploring the fascinating Sonoran Desert and the beautiful mountains throughout the area. Another of Juan’s passions is traveling and experiencing new places and cultures.
