A Unique Approach to Treating Developmental Trauma: Holographic Reprocessing

Hosted by Acadia Healthcare's Treatment Placement Specialists® and Sierra Tucson

Join us for an interactive discussion led by Anna McCarthy, M.A., Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist and Chief of Clinical Innovation for the Sierra Tucson Group. This workshop is an opportunity for mental health professionals to learn about a treatment approach to help clients who have experienced developmental trauma.

Developmental trauma exists, yet currently has no specific DSM-5 diagnostic code.  The groundbreaking study by Kaiser Permanente on “Adverse Childhood Experiences” (ACE’s) has provided empirical support for the idea that untreated ACE’s can lead to a myriad of longitudinal, negative psychological and physiological outcomes, if the initial trauma is never addressed.

Holographic Reprocessing was the brainchild of Dr. Lori Katz. It is a cognitive-experiential approach to treating many forms of trauma, by helping clients identify recurring themes of emotional dysfunction in their lives (hence the idea of a hologram). It also facilitates healing by exposure to past traumatic events through careful, systematic techniques from an “observer” vantage point. The goal is to enable clients to shift perspective, release negative affect, and break patterns of dysfunctional behavior.

This 60-minute presentation will include a brief Q&A session. Please note: This is a complimentary event.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Name key differences between “trauma” as defined by the DSM-5 vs. developmental trauma.
  2. Describe the types of ACE’s, as defined by Kaiser Permanente and be able to list several psychological and physiological outcomes of exposure to ACE’s.
  3. Explain the components of Holographic Reprocessing’s “Pot on the Stove”
  4. List the steps involved in walking a client through a guided exposure to a formative traumatic event
