Title: Collegiate Recovery

Collegiate Recovery Programs provide a supportive environment for those students who seek to live a life of recovery from substances. It consists of campus-based sober living environments, education, treatment and community resources, which help the student to continue to live a sober and healthy life. Collegiate recovery environments are most prevalent today than ever before. Student Affairs Offices have transformed into Wellness Centers for students living on and off campus. With approximately 21% of the young adult population between the ages of 18 and 21 meeting the criteria for substance abuse disorder, the collegiate community provides a vital role in supporting students in recovery and having a positive impact on their lives.

Lisa Arnold is the Clinical Director of the Collegiate Recovery Program at Fairfield University, where she has been employed for the last seventeen years. Lisa serves as chair of the CRP Advisory Board, which is responsible for opening the first Collegiate Recovery House in Connecticut, and the first Jesuit Collegiate Recovery Program in the country with housing. In 2014, Fairfield University’s CRP received the Ignatian Medal for Campus Program of the Year by JASPA (Jesuit Assocation of Student Personnel Administrators).  Lisa is a member of the Opioid Awareness Task Force, which brings several events onto campus throughout the year to promote awareness, reduce the stigma of addiction, and provide Narcan training to students, faculty, and staff.  Lisa has 24 years’ experience working with addiction and recovery in various settings, including detox, rehabilitation, extended care, private practice, drug court, and higher education.  She resides in Litchfield County with her husband of nineteen years and three children, ages 16, 15, and 9.

Tom Bennett is the Higher Education Recovery Coordinator for Acadia Healthcare’s Treatment Placement Specialists®. Tom has spent the past 13 years working exclusively in higher education with senior administrators, department heads, and other on-campus individuals to develop and implement protocol for students requiring treatment for mental and behavioral health issues including substance use, eating disorder, trauma, anxiety, depression, and mood disorder. The result has been to help direct students and their families to appropriate levels of treatment, aftercare, and re-entry into post-secondary institutions, fostering enhanced resilience for the student and increased retention rates for the institution. Tom is the first corporate partner with the HECMA (Higher Education Case Managers Association) and  holds membership in NASPA (Student Affairs Professionals in Higher Education), ACHA (American College Health Association), ASCA (Association of Student Conduct Administration), ARHE (Association of Recovery in Higher Education), and (NARR) (National Alliance of Recovery Residences). He currently sits on the boards of several recovery and treatment organizations including Enders Island at Mystic, CT and The Institute for the Study of Addiction, Treatment, & Families at Texas Tech University. Tom has been directly or indirectly responsible for assisting in guiding development of nearly two dozen Collegiate Recovery Programs nationally. He has long been involved with SAMHSA, Faces and Voices of Recovery, AUCCCD, and the National Conference on Law in Higher Education.

Nicolas Sperry is an Assistant Director in the Office of Residential Life at Boston College and oversees Recovery and Support Programs for the university.  In his role he oversees initiatives that support students who identify as in recovery from substance dependence as well as students pursuing sobriety. Nicolas also serves as a consultant on problem drinking for Boston College as a member of the University Alcohol Task-force and University’s Alcohol Screening and Prevention (ASAP) initiative. Nicolas is licensed as a psychotherapist in Massachusetts (LMHC) and maintains a part-time private practice in Brookline, MA.
