Nothing Occurs – or Recovers – in a Vacuum: Implications for Integrative Mental Health Practices. A New Paradigm in Inpatient Treatment.

Presenter: Antoinette Giedzinska-Simons, PhD

Comorbidity in psychopathology is no longer in an epistemic phase, but an inevitable reality in mental health treatment. For treatment to be successful it must encompass the entire person, not just their presenting symptoms. The first part of this workshop will outline the theoretical aspects of integrative medicine and integrative mental health. The second part will discuss how integrative mental health has been successfully implemented at a premier rehabilitation facility. Case studies will be included to demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach to treatment. Discussion will ensue regarding the consideration of, and challenges to, measuring treatment outcomes in this paradigm.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Explain the historical aspects of, and current operational definition of Integrative Mental Health.
  2. Describe the elements and considerations of implementing Integrative therapeutics into patient treatment planning.
  3. Discuss the challenges of operationalizing outcome variables in order to substantiate clinical progress.

Attendees are behavioral healthcare professionals in private practice, treatment program clinical directors/staff, community agencies and various mental health disciplines. (Preference is for Intermediate to advanced instruction.)

Dr. Antoinette Giedzinska-Simons received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Southern California, where her training emphasized the bio-psycho-social approaches in behavioral medicine, research, and clinical work. Dr. Antoinette provides leadership for several departmental systems, namely Psychology, PsychoNeuroPhysiology, and Outcomes Research. Her enthusiasm as a scientist/practitioner is not only to support staff and educate patients towards resiliency, quality of life enhancement, and stress reduction and management, but to continue one of her favorite passions in life, which is to be part of multidisciplinary teams that collaborate in and integrate cutting-edge modalities aimed to enhance the mind-body connection.
