Topic: Gambling, Gaming, and Social Networking: The Challenge of Technology Addictions
Presenters: Nancy Lantz, LPC, CAC-III, NCGC-II, Private Practice & Trainer and John Bundrick, LPC, NCGC-II, Sandstone Care
While much of our relationship with technology is beneficial, entertaining, and oftentimes necessary, excessive engagement can lead to negative impacts in one's life, possibly resulting in addiction. Clients seeking help for mental health issues and substance use disorders are particularly at risk for technology to negatively impact their lives. As providers, it is imperative that we are competent in our understanding how this can impede our treatment outcomes and our clients' recovery. This presentation will specifically focus on gambling disorder, internet gaming, and social networking as examples of process addictions intrinsically linked to technology that can undermine progress, if not accurately assessed and addressed.
Objectives:
*Name three DSM-5 criteria for gambling disorder and proposed criteria for Internet Gaming Disorder, along with their risk factors
*Explain current research on social networking's impact on mental health and considerations for it being designated as an addiction
*Provide two assessment examples for gambling, gaming, and social networking
*Discuss intervention strategies and resources for treatment
