Speaker:  Valerie M. Kading, DNP, MSN, PMHNP-BC

Women’s mental health must be fundamentally addressed across the life span. The perinatal and perimenopausal periods require critical appraisal and treatment of emotional and mental concerns. An integrative approach to treatment of maternal depression and perimenopausal mood dysregulation is vital to the health and well being of the woman, her children, and family. Health care providers are at the optimal position to address women’s mental health needs and prevent the catastrophic effects of depression and other mood disorders Adequate screening and various modalities of evidence-based treatments are instrumental for women’s mental wellness across the life span.

Objectives:

*Identify the prevalence and significance of postpartum depression
*Discuss impact of maternal depression on offspring, family, and the woman
*Identify various integrative modalities of evidenced-based treatment for maternal depression
*Discuss the health care provider’s role in screening, treatment, and referral
*Identify and assess perimenopausal mood symptoms and evidence-based treatment
