"Bodies Out of Balance:
The impact of Biochemistry on Mood
and Restoration through Integrative Medicine"
Speaker: Judy Gianni, N.M.D.
Our brains and moods are influenced biochemically by a complex dance of hormonal levels, neurotransmitters, blood sugar levels, endorphins and so on. When these levels are out of balance, even the most level headed person can struggle. It is important as a therapist to know when your clients are suffering at the mercy of their imbalanced biochemistry which can be an impediment to successful outcomes in treatment. Achieving balance through integrative and natural medicine, patients are better able to focus on their therapy and not be sabotaged by physical imbalances.
Objectives:
Identify the signs of hormonal imbalances which impact mood including PMS, menopause, andropause, hypoglycemia, hyper and hypothyroidism, high and low adrenal states, high and low blood sugar levels and how they may be easily mistaken for mood disorders, or worsen existing mental and emotion issues.
Explain when a medical referral may be in order and to which professionals may best be able to help your patients to identify these issues and correct these imbalances.
Describe how integrative medicine can offer balance and assistance with physical imbalances that mimic or exacerbate mental and emotional issues.
Explain how nutrients, amino acids, bio-identical hormones, amino acids, ect. can create a strong foundation of wellness enabling your clients to focus better on their therapy and growth.
Dr. Judy Gianni joined the Integrative Medicine team at Sierra Tucson in April 2010. She is a 1995 graduate of Bastyr University in Seattle, earning her doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine. She served from 2001 until 2003 as the naturopathic preceptor in the Program of Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona alongside Andrew Weil, M.D., teaching the Fellows about natural medicine in weekly case conference. She is the founder and director of NatureMedica Naturopathic spa and clinic in Tucson. Dr. Gianni works with the patients at Sierra Tucson to find ways to optimize their health and well-being with natural and integrative medicine. Dr. Gianni is skilled in hormone assessment and balancing, bio-identical hormone prescribing, herbal, homeopathic, and nutritional medicine. She is a compassionate listener and truly cares about each patient she interacts with, wanting to assist them in their path to wellness

Speaker: Mark D. Green, MD
Addictions professionals routinely deal with patients no one else wants, the nightmare, heart-sink or plain unpleasant. They come to us as intractable, diagnostic conundrums, personality disordered and hopeless. Of course, it all depends on what you, the treater, see and what you are trying to do. We will discuss how to engage, diagnose and treat such patients that often turn out to be dual disordered, frightened, disempowered and plain old addicted. With solid diagnostic skill, a harm reduction approach, shared decision making and value based approach significant change happens.

"Money Conversations: Three Tools for Therapists"
Speaker: Sheila Reinke Best, Ph.D.
Frequently, emotional stress stems from financial worry; yet, most people do not discuss their finances with anyone, especially when those finances are troubled. Therapists can identify if money is the issue, but having a productive conversation with their client about that issue can be extremely difficult. The design of this presentation provides therapists with alternative methods for facilitating money conversations with their clients.
Learning Objectives:
Demonstrate the three tools for facilitating money conversations.
Assess the results of those conversations.
Define appropriate goals to resolve the issues involved.
For almost 25 years, Sheila Best worked in mental health as a counselor, psychotherapist, and instructor. Sheila then spent 10 years in the financial world as an account administrator, investment representative, and Registered Financial Advisor – acquiring a multitude of additional licenses and credentials along the way. In 2012, Sheila uniquely combined her diverse skillset and became a Certified Money Coach. The focus of her practice is having open and honest conversations about money with your family, partner, and trusted advisors.
