An addiction to heroin is one of the most difficult of all chemical dependency concerns to overcome. Individuals struggling to overcome a substance abuse problem of this kind often fall victim to the cycle of addiction, as the withdrawal associated with this substance can be quite uncomfortable and painful when an individual ceases his or her use. Those in the throes of a heroin addiction often resort to drastic measures to sustain their addiction, which often comes at the cost of their physical and mental health. Unfortunately, overdose is common among abusers of this substance and the risk for this type of consequence remains present if a person continues to abuse heroin. However, there is help available that can assist people in achieving a healthy and sober life.
As the best rehab center for heroin addiction, at Sierra Tucson we offer the life-saving treatment that is needed to successfully combat an addiction to heroin. Our state-of-the-art and innovative treatment for addiction is centered on recovery from drugs like heroin, and includes the best care for any additional mental health concerns that could be plaguing a person at the same time.
Helping a Loved One or Family Member Get Treatment
Those closest to a person battling an addiction to heroin may feel powerless against the drug that seems to be consuming the life of someone they love. Even if there have been prior attempts to help a friend or loved one get treatment for an addiction of this kind, there are some things that can still be done to help a person turn his or her life around. Consider the following:
- Learn what you can about heroin and what makes this substance so addictive and life-threatening. While you may bear witness to the harm this drug can cause, it is important to learn as much as one can about this substance.
- Consult with a mental health professional if you are unsure if a friend or family member is battling an addiction to heroin. These types of professionals can convey warning signs that this substance is being abused.
- Research treatment options that can meet your loved one’s needs. It is also a good idea to consider treatment providers that offer mental health treatment as well, as those addicted to heroin are often suffering from mental health concerns at the same time.
- Talk with your loved one about his or her addiction and convey the need for treatment. During this conversation, you can present your findings regarding treatment.
- Try not to enable your loved one’s drug-seeking behavior. Offering him or her money or supplying transportation to and from individuals providing the drug can only worsen your loved one’s current prognosis.
- Communicate your willingness and desire to support him or her in getting treatment and offer to be part of the recovery process.
Lastly, it is important to keep in mind that the road to a recovered and sober life can be an arduous one. There may be setbacks and relapse in the process of recovery. You, as a concerned loved one, must remain patient, supportive, and understanding during this time. An addiction to heroin does not occur overnight and becoming sober is not an instant occurrence either. By being patient, supportive, and understanding, your loved one will be keener to adhere to treatment recommendations and strive for a life of lasting sobriety.
Why Consider Treatment at Our Rehab Center for Heroin Addiction
There is a reason why heroin is considered one of the most dangerous drugs in existence today. Addicts of this substance are at an ever-present risk for overdose and the withdrawal associated with heroin is able to keep a person in a cycle of ongoing substance abuse despite the adverse effects that could occur. Poor health is common among these individuals, as regular heroin use can render a person susceptible to infection, disease, and other concerns that could prove life-threatening. Additionally, relationships with other people could become strained and deteriorate over time, as heroin tends to be the user’s only focus. Acquiring and maintaining employment is also difficult for abusers of heroin and financial problems because of this type of instability are likely to occur. With regards to a person’s overall mental health, if there are any existing mental health concerns, they are likely to worsen. If an individual does not possess a mental illness, symptoms of a disorder could emerge and make overcoming this form of substance abuse even more challenging. Luckily, there are treatment options available that help a person addicted to heroin learn the skills and tools needed to beat his or her heroin addiction and come to know a life that is happy and free.

To provide the attention and safety that each individual deserves, this unit is conveniently located in the center of our campus and offers the opportunity for a bi-directional continuum of care within our levels of treatment. When a resident is admitted to our rehab with heroin in his or her system, the first step in treatment will be to undergo the medical detoxification services offered at Desert Flower in order to safely rid his or her body of the toxic substance. This period of detoxification is monitored by medical personnel to ensure a person’s safety and comfort during the process. Residents will also engage in a number of therapeutic interventions during their time in Desert Flower. Following stabilization and treatment completion at Desert Flower, residents will then engage in comprehensive residential treatment at our center.
Treatment for substance abuse concerns, including the abuse of heroin, is delivered through our rehab’s Addiction Recovery Program. Offered within our behavioral health residential treatment center, services supplied in this treatment plan are designed to elicit the most favorable outcomes for all residents. Our reputation as a leading drug addiction rehab center stems from our clinical excellence and the best, compassionate care that we afford to everyone who seeks our services. Our holistic approach to treatment respects the dignity of each individual while offering a therapeutic environment that is fully conducive to healing of the mind, body, and spirit. It is our belief that, as residents gain new communication skills and learn to build healthy relationships, they can make sound decisions for a healthy quality of life and form deeper connections with others.
Using a bio-psycho-social-spiritual approach to care, residents engaged in the Addiction Recovery Program can partake in the following treatment methods, which are outlined in each resident’s individualized treatment plan, as well as in our heroin addiction treatment center’s daily schedules:
Medication management: When individuals are struggling with the presence of a co-occurring disorder in addition to their addiction to heroin, the implementation of psychotropic medications may be incorporated into their overall plan of care at our rehab center. The need for such medications, however, is always determined on a case-by-case basis. Residents who are engaged in the Addiction Recovery treatment plan will have the opportunity to meet with either a psychiatrist or qualified physician at a minimum of once per week so that any medications that have been prescribed can be monitored for therapeutic effectiveness and any necessary changes can be made.
Individual therapy: Master’s-level clinicians and/or licensed psychologists at our treatment center offer individual therapy sessions with residents several times per week depending upon the treatment modality that is being used. All residents are guaranteed, however, that a minimum of one individual session will take place every week. Each resident’s therapist will be assigned to him or her depending upon the identified presenting concerns, the therapeutic approach that will be used in order to effectively address those concerns, and the specific training that the therapist possesses. These sessions occur in a confidential, one-to-one setting where the resident is afforded the opportunity to discuss his or her progress in treatment, address any concerns that may arise, and process through various feelings that he or she is experiencing.
Group therapy: At the time that residents are admitted into the Addiction Recovery treatment plan at our rehab center, they are assigned to a small group of peers, all of whom are engaged in the same treatment. This group will meet for therapy sessions four times per week. In addition to serving as a general process group, topics that are covered during these group sessions may include, but are not limited to:
- Didactic lectures
- Working through grief and loss
- Identifying feelings of shame in order to move to a place of resilience
- Relapse prevention
- Healing anxiety
- Anger management
Four-Day Family Program: Recognizing the important role of loved ones in the lives of residents, our heroin abuse rehab’s Family Program includes Family Week, a four-day experience for family members and other close identified loved ones of residents. Family Week typically occurs during a resident’s third week of treatment and allows loved ones to engage in the therapeutic process to practice healthy communication and boundaries with understanding and support. Family members and loved ones can attend psycho-educational lectures, process groups, and a family dinner that can unify a family unit in a powerful way. Lastly, loved ones can remain in contact with a resident’s primary therapist should questions or concerns arise during the course of treatment.
Therapeutic & Recreational Activities: In order to help residents build a stronger sense of self and increased confidence as they overcome their addiction to heroin, this type of treatment offers residents a myriad of therapeutic activities, which are conducted on a daily or weekly basis. A resident’s participation in such activities will be outlined in his or her treatment plan and may include the following:
- Expressive art
- Adventure therapy (including a ropes course and rock wall)
- Equine therapy
Additional services: In order to fully care for the needs of those who are working through an addiction to heroin and any co-occurring conditions, our treatment center is proud to offer a number of additional services through an innovative approach to treatment. Special time is set aside for selected individual appointments, which will be outlined in one’s treatment plan in order to address individualized needs. Such services may include, but are not limited to:
- Somato-Emotional Release (SER) massage
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
- Somatic Experiencing® (SE)
- Mindfulness meditation
- Personal training
- Psychological testing
Furthermore, residents engaged in the care delivered through the Addiction Recovery treatment plan at our rehab center will be provided with educational lectures and will participate in 12-Step meetings. Each day will end on a positive note by allowing residents to gather together and reflect through a Gifts and Blessings Ceremony.
Should a resident require stabilization services while engaged in our rehab’s residential treatment, he or she is able to partake in the services supplied by Desert Flower before returning to residential treatment. The staff of professionals conducts an ongoing assessment of each resident’s progress and needs and offers assistance in making this transition smooth so as to continue the process of healing with as little disruption as possible.
Continuing Care and Levels of Treatment
Our heroin addiction treatment center’s method for providing the best, all-encompassing care for every resident who walks through our doors includes thorough discharge planning and continuing care services. Once a resident engages in services to treat an addiction to heroin and co-occurring concerns at our rehab, a comprehensive continuing care plan is devised so that he or she can remain successful once treatment is complete. Those partaking in the services at Desert Flower meet with continuing care staff to assess each individual’s needs and plan for discharge. Those engaged in the residential treatment at our rehab center meet with the same continuing care staff and their local treatment placement specialist (TPS), and participate in lectures and one-on-one planning sessions to ensure quality referrals and establish any follow-up appointments that may be required once they have been discharged.
Furthermore, residents exiting the residential treatment, along with their family members, can benefit from Connect365, a year-long service to help bridge the gap between residential treatment and life in recovery. This service is offered at no additional cost and includes a personal recovery coach, a recovery management system via mobile app, and ongoing encouragement from the participant’s support team. Residents connect with their recovery coach during treatment in order to build a strong rapport with him or her prior to discharge.
Lastly, former residents can take part in the Alumni Relations affiliated with our rehab. These services include support groups offered throughout the country, workshops, social activities, and the annual Alumni Retreat.
If you or a loved one wishes to receive the superior care that has improved the lives of many individuals who have struggled with heroin addiction and co-occurring conditions, look no further than our treatment center. The life you have envisioned begins here.
