Chicago Alumni Workshop

“Climbing Out of the Happiness Trap”

Tuesday, June 26, 2018SierraTucsonAR.Logo&Tag.PMS

Presenter:

Sarah Briley, EdD, LCPC, CADC

Event Description:

Humans have a complex relationship with language and the things they tell themselves about the world around them. In an effort to understand our environment, we tend to believe we must be happy. Despite our best efforts, we often engage in behaviors that actually reinforce negative behavior patterns, giving us the exact opposite result. This 90-minute interactive presentation is based on the core components of ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy) and a concept called the happiness trap, as described by Russ Harris, MD, PhD. Participants will leave this presentation with a better understanding of their values, mindfulness techniques, and strategies that lead to real change.

Objectives:

After completing this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the six core processes of ACT (Acceptance, Cognitive Defusion, Being Present, Self as Context, Values, Committed Action).
  2. Articulate personal values and personal plan for engaging in values based action.
  3. Employ strategies for reducing stress and worry, and developing a roadmap for designing a rich, meaningful life.
