Grief in Recovery
Presenter: Gigi Veasey, LCSW, LISAC, CCBT

This presentation will look at grief as a prominent underlying issue in addiction which effects sobriety outcomes. We will discuss complicated, chronic, and delayed grief along with their impact on family systems and tolerance for grieving styles. The four gifts and the five written expressions of grief will be explained as a helpful tool in helping clients move through and heal from complicated grief.

 

Addiction: Disease or Defect? And Medication Assisted Treatment

Presenter:Simon Olstein, MD, FASAM, FACS, RYT

A presentation about the rethinking of addiction as a chronic brain disease rather than as a strictly psychological or moral condition. Topics covered will include theories about the root causes of addiction, the influence of genetics on addiction, a discussion about brain anatomy, the brain’s pleasure/reward system and how it can be hijacked by drugs and alcohol, how tolerance develops, why recovery is about more than just willpower. Also covered will be a presentation about medication assisted treatment in the management of substance use disorders, including a discussion about the ongoing reluctance by many clinicians and treatment centers to use medications.

Objectives:

* Discuss the differences in grieving styles.

* Explain the differences between complicated, chronic, and delayed grief.

* Identify the impact of grief in recovery.

* Identify the negative and counterproductive consequences of applying the moral model in one’s approach to the individual with substance use disorder.

* Demonstrate how the neurochemical and structural changes in the brain caused by addiction can alter behavior.

* Explain the mechanisms of action of various medications used in the treatment of substance use disorder and address the ongoing widespread misconceptions surrounding many of these medications.

 

Attendees for these intermediate to advance presentations are behavioral healthcare professionals in private practice, treatment program clinical directors/staff, community agencies and various mental health disciplines.

 

Simon Olstein, MD, FASAM, FACS, RYT.  Dr. Olstein is the medical director of Scottsdale Treatment, Inc. He joined STI in 2009. He previously practiced Vascular Surgery in the Valley of the Sun for over 25 years. He obtained his medical degree from New York Medical College, New York, N.Y. in 1973. He completed his internship, general surgery residency and vascular surgery fellowship in Phoenix, AZ. He obtained a degree in chemical dependency in 2010. He was board certified in Addiction Medicine by the American Board of Addiction Medicine in 2010. He was previously certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS). Dr. Olstein is a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (FASAM) and is the secretary of the Board of Directors of the Arizona Society of Addiction Medicine. He is a clinical assistant professor at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix, teaching 1st and 2nd year medical students. He is also a registered yoga teacher (500-hour RYT). Dr. Olstein was named to Phoenix Magazine’s 2001 and 2003 Top Doctors list for Vascular Surgery. In 2011 he was named to the magazine’s Top Doctors list for Addiction Medicine.

 

Gigi Veasey, LCSW, LISAC, CCBT is the Owner and Executive Director of Alcohol Recovery Solutions, Inc. an outpatient clinic in Phoenix, Arizona that assists adults struggling with alcohol and substance abuse/dependency as well as co-occurring disorders.  Ms. Veasey received her Masters degree in Social Work from Arizona State University and is a Licensed Independent Substance Abuse Counselor, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and holds a national certification as a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist. Gigi has been in private practice for over 18 years specializing in working with clients challenged by self esteem issues, co-dependency, traumatic history, grief/loss and overeating. She has presented to multiple groups and organizations on the topics of grief and recovery. Gigi is the co-founder of Inspired Life Strategies, LLC which focuses on retreat work; removing clients from their environments to promote therapeutic breakthroughs. She host therapeutic retreats in Bali, Indonesia, Italy, Spain, Greece and local four day intensives on the topics of self esteem, grief/loss and stress and life balance. Her philosophy regarding treatment and recovery is to do whatever works for that individual and she employs a multi-disciplinary team and a holistic view for greatest success. She is working on her first book, “Living With A Loss: A Therapist Guide to Helping Clients Move Through Complicated Grief.”
