Title: Diagnostic and Treatment Strategies for Bipolar Disorder

Description:
Research shows that 69% of patients with bipolar disorder have been misdiagnosed at least once in their lifetimes and will have waited an average of nearly 10 years before receiving appropriate bipolar treatment. This seminar will first present the common factors in the misidentification of bipolar disorder, along with discussion to improve the identification of bipolar in clinical practice. Finally, a three-phase conceptual approach to bipolar disorder therapy will be presented, along with specific therapeutic techniques and objectives to meet the challenges of each phase.

Objectives:
*Identify principal factors in the misidentification and mistreatment of bipolar disorder
*Assess and uncover mania and hypomania in a clinical interview
*Identify common factors of bipolar treatment resistance and self-destructive/high-risk behaviors
*Formulate a therapeutic plan using a three-phase approach to treatment for patients and families

Bio:
Michael G. Pipich, M.S., LMFT is a psychotherapist, lecturer and media personality who has over 30 years of experience in mental health practice. He has taught graduate-level courses in diagnosis and psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, and substance abuse and addictions. Michael has also provided national professional trainings in bipolar diagnosis and treatment, along with community-based bipolar educational groups for patients and families.
