Title: Working with Physicians: A Labor of Love

Speaker: Janice Blair, PhD

This presentation will walk you through what it was like, what happened, and what it’s like now for physicians who find themselves in trouble with their Boards and often mandated to receive treatment.  This is a vulnerable population that has a lot to lose if they’re honest about their need for help.  Many ultimately face a quagmire of problems that can go on for years, both personally and professionally.  We’ll explore the personal and workplace issues setting them up for a fall, and what they need with respect to assessment, treatment, and aftercare.

Attendees for this intermediate presentation are behavioral healthcare professionals in private practice and treatment program clinical directors/staff.

Objectives:
*Identify external and internal factors putting physicians at risk for psychological/emotional/behavioral problems
*Identify reasons why physicians do not seek professional help
*Describe unique aspects of treating physicians relative to the general population
*Identify the key elements in their assessment, treatment, and aftercare protocols

Dr. Janice Blair is a Board certified clinical psychologist licensed in Arizona. Her expertise is in the assessment and treatment of chemical dependency which comprises about half her practice. She worked for several years at the Betty Ford Center and collaborated in the development of their Family Program. Dr. Blair is currently in private practice in Scottsdale, working with individuals, families, and couples. She facilitates groups, including a general womens process group, a physicians recovery group, and a general recovery group aimed at a deep and personal experience of the 12 steps. Dr. Blair has facilitated comprehensive interventions for over 20 years.
