"Trauma and First Responders, What Therapists Need to Know"

It is often said that it takes a special person to be a first responder. Police officers, firefighters, paramedics and EMTS endure constant exposure to traumatic experiences.  The cumulative effect of responding to calls that include car accidents, medical issues, violence, fatalities and fighting fires takes its’ toll on first responders.  More often than not, they typically do not seek mental health care until their bucket is overflowing and a crisis in their own lives has occurred.  When there is a notable call such as a mass traumatic event, first responders are thrust into the limelight.  The truth is, however, that they respond to traumatic events whenever they are on duty.  If we believe that it takes a special type of human being to be a first responder, it is also true that it takes a special kind of mental health practitioner to work with these courageous men and women.  This presentation will focus on the best practices (the do’s and don’ts) in working with first responders.

Presenter:  Dawn Roy, LCSW, ACS

Dawn earned her Master’s Degree in Social Work with a focus on Children and Families from Southern Connecticut State University in 1992. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, she holds an Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) credential, and is a certified Mental Health First aid instructor.  Additionally, Dawn has a background in assisting Public Safety First Responders, having provided trauma treatment using EMDR and other related evidenced based treatment modalities following numerous traumatic events. Earning the respect of these first responders who are generally hesitant to seek help, she can provide potential public safety clients with references to ease their minds about counseling. Dawn has worked with referrals from Employees Assistance Programs, and is well versed with the sensitive nature of emergency services work.  Dawn currently maintains a private clinical practice in Fairfield, CT and continues to offer a range of services that include individual, couples and group therapy as well as consultation and training.  Dawn is also a member of the Fairfield County Trauma Recovery Network, a team of licensed, seasoned trauma therapists trained in EMDR and disaster response. Finally, Dawn is an adjunct faculty member in the Human Services Department at Housatonic Community College.
