Title: Cross Addiction

Presenter: Elizabeth Lance, LICSW, Primary Therapist at Sierra Tucson

Cross addiction is a transfer of addictions, the exchange of one harmful dependency for another and often results in a return to the chemical of choice,( Hazleden). The presentation goes further to look at why people relapse continuously and suggests that they have not dug deep into issues underlying the addiction, hence the pattern of self-medicating with other forms of compulsive behaviors.

Attendees for this introductory presentation are behavioral healthcare professionals in private practice, treatment program clinical directors/staff, community agencies, and various mental health disciplines.

Objectives:
*Explain Cross Addiction
*Discuss what is underneath cross addiction
*Identify three challenges for providers to focus on unprocessed trauma that may perpetuate relapse into compulsive behaviors

Elizabeth Lance, LICSW has an undergraduate degree in French from the University of Kent at Canterbury in England. She taught high school French in England before immigrating to San Francisco with her husband and two children. Elizabeth attended graduate school in Rhode Island for social work, specializing in mental health, and realized she enjoyed the pastoral aspect of teaching rather than preparing lesson plans. After moving with her family to Buffalo, New York, Elizabeth worked in an outpatient psychiatric clinic before seeking the sunnier climes of southern Arizona. She has worked at Sierra Tucson for nearly 14 years as a primary therapist in the Eating Recovery and Mood & Anxiety Programs. For the last few years, she has also worked in the Addictions / Co-occurring Disorders Program.

“I love working in an environment where I am truly a member of a team that provides the best possible treatment. I enjoy watching our residents have sober fun, engage in sober laughter, and plan their future as sober individuals,” Elizabeth says.
