A New Paradigm for Pain

In his article, “A New Paradigm for Pain,” Bennet Davis, MD – former president of The Integrative Pain Center of Arizona and newly appointed director for Sierra Tucson’s Pain Recovery Program – writes about how understanding psychological pain could offer insight into conditions such as fibromyalgia. Originally published in The Journal of Family Practice in September 2016, Dr. Davis’s article explores the three types of pain, and that the third type of pain – which he refers to as “pain for psychological reasons” – exists in a person’s nervous system, not in his or her mind. “We hypothesize that this pain may be the consequence of changes in nervous system function that arise from developmental trauma, other traumatic experiences in a patient’s life, or mental health disorders,” he writes.
