Sierra Tucson Introduces Brain SPECT Scanning
By Staff Writer
In 2009 Sierra Tucson expanded its neuroscience capabilities with the introduction of brain SPECT scanning. SPECT scans can be valuable for patients being treated for addictions and mental and behavioral disorders, as they provide helpful diagnostic data, allow for more targeted therapies, and help motivate patients in their recovery.
SPECT scanning provides real-time three-dimensional pictures of blood flow in the brain. "Brain SPECT imaging provides clinically useful information on how an individual's brain functions, particularly in complex or treatment-resistant cases," said Robert R. Johnson, D.O., Sierra Tucson's Medical Director. "This more complete diagnostic picture adds biological information to the presenting problem, often helping to inform treatment planning."
The scanning can also help motivate patients to continue in their recovery. An abnormal brain SPECT scan can make it harder for patients to deny the impact of their drug or alcohol use. The scans show patients the medical perspective of their addiction, helping to reduce their shame and guilt.
