"Creating Space for Self-Care & Self-Compassion"

September 15, 2016

Presenter:
Sierra Tucson Alumnus Gus C.

Event Description:

In recovery, we are given tools to use when cravings, negative emotions and “stinking thinking” arise, such as calling our sponsor or a recovery friend, going to a meeting, and reading recovery-related literature. However, as useful and necessary as these tools are, eventually we may find ourselves at a point when they are not possible. Mindfulness is a practice whereby we use our attention to change our brains to change our minds. Mindfulness teaches us to 'pause before agitated.' Instead of doing, we practice being with our feelings, emotions and thoughts - whether pleasant or unpleasant - while offering ourselves kindness. Mindfulness helps us create a space to respond in non-harmful, healthy and compassionate ways, rather than reacting impulsively. The art of responding leads to our growth and freedom, and allows us to thrive in recovery.

In this experiential workshop, participants will learn how mindfulness changes our brains, reduces stress, and enhances resiliency and well being. Following the discussion, we will practice a brief mindfulness exercise and conclude with a Q&A for feedback and sharing.

This is a complimentary event for Sierra Tucson Resident & Family Member Alumni. We ask that you please register by Wednesday, September 14, 2016.
