3-day Workshop presented by Sierra Tucson
Speakers: Robert C. Scaer, M.D. and Ana do Valle, OTR, SEP
18 Continuing Education Credits Available!
Schedule:
August 6 – 8, 2010
9:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. each day
Location:
Workshop will be held in Los Angeles, California,
10 miles from the Los Angeles
International Airport (map will be provided).
Workshop Description:
Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) is a major contributor to impaired self-regulation in children, adolescents, and adults in our society. It is commonly present in such conditions as anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), mood disorders, Tourette’s syndrome, ADHD, learning disabilities, and a variety of chronic pain and somatic syndromes. SPD joins related trauma-based disorders that reflect the pervasive effects of negative life experiences in early childhood, including Developmental Trauma Disorders (DTD), Attachment Disorders, and Disorders of Extreme Stress, NOS (DESNOS). All are under consideration for inclusion in the DSM-V and reflect a burgeoning interest in the field of psychotherapy in the role of early childhood trauma on many complex emotional symptoms in adulthood, including the Axis II disorders.
Difficulties regulating activity level, attuning, coordinating and planning body movement in space, and making sense of sensory input are common in SPD. Sensitivity to and avoidance of various sensory stimulus (auditory, visual tactile, movement, olfactory), as well as attraction, or seeking such sensory input are common in SPD.
This workshop will provide basic knowledge of the basis for SPD in brain physiology and link this with the physiology of trauma. It will present many diseases and syndromes that are related to trauma physiology. The Polyvagal Theory and new theories of dissociation will be emphasized. This will provide a basis for effective trauma therapy.
Experiential training will include screening of SPD as well as practical intervention techniques for regulating sensory motor processing skills. The participants will review case studies and learn exercises that will facilitate the processing and integration of sensory stimuli, promoting embodiment and regulation within the nervous system.
This workshop is appropriate for healthcare professionals: physicians, psychologists, social workers, nurses, physical, occupational and speech therapists, addiction counselors, and body-workers.
Learning Objectives:
- Recognize the inter-connection between the body senses and auto/self-regulation and their importance in trauma recovery.
- Apply the Sensory Integration model for treating disorders of trauma, both mental and physical.
- Recognize the relationships between trauma, sensory processing disorder, and disease.
- Define Dissociation in relationship to the Polyvagal Theory and the dorsal vagal nucleus.
Robert C. Scaer, M.D., is a neurologist, specializing in the field of traumatic stress. He has written two books, The Body Bears the Burden and The Trauma Spectrum, which present a new, neurophysiological theory of trauma that expands the meaning and role of dissociation and explores sources of unrecognized culturally-based trauma, the link between trauma and poorly understood somatic and behavioral syndromes, and the implications of these theories for the healing of trauma. He is retired from clinical practice and continues to travel and lecture widely.
Ana do Valle, OTR, SEP, SIC, NDTC, is an Occupational Therapist and body-centered therapist who specializes in self-regulation related to trauma and sensory integration dysfunction. She is certified in Sensory Integration and Neuro-developmental Treatment and has extensive experience working with physical disabilities related to trauma and dissociation. She has studied cross-cultural perspectives of trauma (Susto) with Indigenous and Shamanic Communities in South America. She is approved by the Foundation for Human Enrichment to provide all levels individual and supervision sessions for Somatic Experiencing practitioners. She is in private practice in Boulder, Colorado, providing services for infants, children and adults.

Speaker: Meira Yaer, RN, MA, MFT, CBIS

Her work focuses on the healing of Body–Mind–Spirit through Self-Awareness and Self-Empowerment. "Eating Disorders and the Secret Multiple Diagnoses"
Speaker: Ms. Jeannette Rojas
Eating disorders often co-exist along with trauma, depression and self-harm behaviors. Although clinicians have the DSM-IV-TR as a tool, with clear descriptions of different criteria for the various mental disorders, there is some disagreement in cases of dual diagnosis, selecting what is the primary problem. Objectives:
- The participant will be able to identify the relationship between eating disorders and trauma, self harm behaviors, and depression and practical techniques to address and stop self harm behaviors.
- To provide practical techniques to help patients to express anger in a healthy way.
- The participant will learn practical tools, exercises to treat eating disorder patients who have depression, trauma or self harm behaviors.
Ms. Jeannette Rojas, is a clinical psychologist (Mexico City), LASAC, EAP II, specializing in addictions and eating disorders. She is a primary therapist for the Eating Disorder Program at Sierra Tucson.
This workshop will provide strategies and interventions to treat eating disorder patients who have a dual diagnosis such as eating disorder, depression, trauma, and self-harm behaviors.
Ms. Jeannette Rojas, is a clinical psychologist (Mexico City), LASAC, EAP II, specializing in addictions and eating disorders. She is a primary therapist for the Eating Disorder Program at Sierra Tucson. "Retrieving The Missing Pieces: A Cross-Cultural Approach to Memory Fragmentation;
Speaker: Sarah Jenkins, LPC
Ancient cultures, across continents, have identified the importance of processing dissociated aspects of the self. With this in mind, and staying true to the eight-phase EMDR treatment model, a cross-cultural, shamanic approach to processing sensory-motor aspects of trauma is provided.
Objectives:
- Attendees will be able to identify the relationship between the fragmented aspects of the sensory-motor aspects of trauma, ego state therapy, and cross-cultural shamanic approaches to trauma treatment.
- Attendees will be able to identify specific indicators, including incomplete client narratives, that unprocessed fragments of the sensory-motor aspects of trauma are impeding client processing during EMDR.
- Attendees will gain an increased understanding of fragmentation and its impact on trauma processing.
Sarah Jenkins is an EMDRIA Certified EMDR therapist and Licensed Professional Counselor. Her private practice is located in Tempe, where she specializes in treating survivors of childhood abuse. Ms. Jenkins is also an adjunct professor for the Arizona State University and University of Phoenix. In addition, she has also served as a Clinical Supervisor for a government funded, EMDR trauma treatment program. Ms. Jenkins has lived in Europe and the United States, and seeks to bring a cross-cultural perspective to her clinical work.
