Therapists are invited to continue training as a distinguished Certified Sex Addiction Therapist in this Module 4 (of 4) CSAT® Training. This program has become the industry's standard certification for all therapists working with individuals who suffer from addictive and compulsive sexual behaviors. Some preparation work required for the training, so please register as soon as you can for your convenience.

IITAP’s mission is to provide cutting-edge training and promote the highest level of professional standards among practitioners worldwide that treat those individuals with sex addiction and associated disorders. The program is designed to provide formal knowledge and training in the task-centered approach to the treatment of sexual addiction and sexual compulsivity. It is IITAP’s role to facilitate the CSAT Certification Process and other educational programs, as well as to assist CSATs in creating a support network. IITAP is committed to guiding new CSAT candidates through the certification process and keeping the current CSAT community up-to-date on the latest news and developments in addiction research. "Minding Your Own Business"
Speaker: Bryon Sabatino, LPC, LISAC

This seminar is designed to provide participants with a working knowledge of how to use mindfulness Based Stress Reduction personally and professionally through experiential meditation. It will provide a framework from which to build skill sets to effectively reduce and manage stress in your personal and professional life, and the lives of your clients. To get the most benefit out of this experience, it includes an approximate 10-minute mindful eating experience and a 30-minute meditation, and dialogue. Please feel free to dress comfortably.
Objectives:
  1. Define Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction.
  2. List the cognitive habits that contribute to stress.
  3. Describe the application of Mindfulness-Based meditation as an adjunct to psychotherapy for the spectrum of depressive and anxiety disorders, grief, chronic pain, codependency and stress.
  4. Discuss the relationship between Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
Bryon Sabatino earned his master’s degree in counseling at Arizona State University in 1987. He is a licensed professional counselor and a licensed independent substance abuse counselor practicing in Tempe. He has been practicing mindfulness-based meditation both personally and professionally since 1992.

"Biological and Psychological Consequences of Traumatic Events"
Speakers: Barbara Peraino, Ph.D. and Joe Peraino, Ph.D.

This presentation will discuss types of traumatic experiences including natural disasters, domestic violence, child abuse, and exposure to war time experiences and how they can change brain structure and function. Women are twice as likely as men to be diagnosed with PTSD. The effects of trauma are profound, and predisposition can affect a victim's response. This program presents the biological and psychological effects of trauma, which groups are more vulnerable to long lasting effects of trauma, and what factors mitigate the trauma response.

Objectives:
  1. Summarize the biology of the stress response and how trauma can change the brain.
  2. Analyze cognitive and emotional consequences of trauma.
  3. Apply treatment implications for trauma recovery based on current neuroscience research. resased on
Barbara Peraino received a Ph. D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin. She has been in private practice for many years, and she evaluates and treats persons with stress and anxiety disorders. Her interest in the neuroscience and psycho-endocrine consequences of stress have been a continuous thread throughout her work starting at the Methodist Hospital Institute for Preventive Medicine to her current work with veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. She is a member of APA and the Division of Health Psychology. She has been awarded the Dean’s Teaching Award multiple times during her years on the faculty of the Houston Community College System.

Joe Peraino also received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin. (Yes, they met in grad school.) He has served on the adjunct faculty at the University of Houston and Baylor College of Medicine. He also served as president of the Houston Psychological Association. He has published articles in peer-reviewed psychology journals and recently in the Colorado Lawyer. He has appeared in public media outlets including magazines, TV and radio. In addition to clinical and forensic psychology responsibilities, he has spent the last three years performing PTSD and other disability evaluations for the VA systems in Texas and Colorado.

"Biological Treatment of Substance Abuse (to differentiate from the main stream psychotherapy of substance abuse)."
Speaker: Wenhui Cai, MD, PhD


Dr. Cai will present the substance dependence biological treatment options, the cormorbidities with substance dependence condition, and the psychopharmacological treatment approaches to these conditions.

Objectives:
  1. Learn the effective biological treatment for Substance Abuse patients.
  2. Learn the psychiatric cormorbidities with Substance Abuse Diagnosis.
  3. Learn the obstacles and challenges of providing psychiatric care for Substance Abuse patients.
Dr. Wenhui Cai is a board certified psychiatrist. He got his medical degree from Shanghai Medical University, China, and his PhD degree in Neuroscience at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. After completing his psychiatry residency training at Washington University in St Louis, he assumed a faculty position at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, where he led his own research team and conducted translational research under federal funding. From 2009-2011, he relocated to Tucson, Arizona where he became the medical director for Southeastern Arizona Behavioral Health System (SEABHS), the mental health agency that has 8 outpatient clinics and one psychiatric hospital. Currently Dr. Cai is the President and CEO of Wellbeing Institute, an outpatient psychiatric private practice serving high functioning clients. In addition to the clinical practice, Dr. Cai conducts clinical studies as principal investigator as well, researching the cutting edge pharmacological treatment for psychiatric illnesses. He has two books published under psychiatric education topics.

"Tell Me Your Fantasy and I’ll Tell You Your Trauma: Understanding the Expression of Trauma in Sexual Addiction."
Speaker: Tim Stein, MFT

Sexual addiction is a unique addiction in that its expression typically involves either re-creation of or representations of past trauma. Looking for these trauma expressions and addressing the underlying trauma experience is important to successfully treat sexual addiction. This presentation will offer a basic model of trauma, discuss how and why trauma gets mixed up with sexual addiction, and highlight this connection using case examples.
Objectives:
  1. Explain overt and covert trauma.
  2. Discuss how trauma repetition and re-creation show up in sexual addiction.
  3. Explain how to use recognition of behavioral patterns to help clients struggling with sexual addiction to establish and maintain long term sobriety.
Tim Stein is a Marriage and Family Therapist based in Santa Rosa, CA. He specializes in the treatment of sexual addiction and trauma. Tim Stein is a co-founder of Willow Tree Counseling, a program that treats sexual addiction from a systems perspective – supporting the addict, partner, and family.
